A friend and I were talking the other day about our websites, and we got down to comparing analytic data, specifically that which comes from search engines.  He was quite surprised to find that a good amount of my traffic came not from my primary keywords, but from cleverly chosen "bad spelling" phrases.

Let me explain.  I have a site that reviews health and skincare products.  As you might imagine, each of my blog posts is highly targeted to that specific topic, product, brand and type of target audience.  What i've also done however is included common misspellings as keywords also.  For example, my review on Proactiv Solution gets a great amount of traffic from the keyword "Proactive Solution".  Exposed Skincare System gets traffic from Expozed Skincare system.

At first I thought this might be coincidence, but after a bit of research i came to discover the trend continues across the board, so i worked in these incorrect spelling phrases directly into my blog reviews.  If you look at this page for example on the Hoodia Gordonii Plus product, I have even included a whole section of the page dedicated to misspellings.  These phrases are also in the meta tags (keywords), and when listing these blog posts on social bookmarks and news sites, i include them there.

Now, those who aren't familiar with SEO will possibly be wondering "why?".   It's all about search engine spidering.  When my pages are listed by Google, Bing etc they see the content of my site and the keywords i've used.  That way, when people search for those phrases, the engines run a search, see my site has a reference to them and voila, it lists the site.  That's a very basic way of putting it.

Now, this whole strategy relies on people spelling things wrong... and i have come to realise, it happens a LOT.  In fact, since i've been noticing this, i've even found myself doing it as well.

You're not going to pull in thousands of hits by doing this, but you could definitely increase your daily traffic.  Don't go overboard with it, but if you know of a common misspelling, be sure to include it in your meta tags and (in blog posts), SEO keywords.
